Mathematics Degree Online

Is it possible to complete an online math degree while a Navy Nuke?

After the schooling years could I obtain my degree two years later by doing school full time while working as a Nuke? I really want a degree but also need money ASAP so I am considering this route because I can become a Nuke officer with a mathematics degree. University of Illinois offers a math degree completely online after you complete gen. ed requirements and maths up to Calculus 3. I just wonder how it will go. I know I can take math classes online but I'm thinking about the required sciences. Yes, I have an acceptable ASVAP score to qualify for Nuke. The recruiter brought it to my attention. After two years of training will they give me two plus to obtain a bachelors? And I will owe them... how many years? Thanks for the responses. I may consider trying to become a translator/interpretor/linguist.

  1. Have you qualified as a nuke? That is equivalent to my Marine Corps MOS. What I have read indicates that your expenses will be paid for online training. Typically, the military is very supportive of any formal education. In my time there were programs for enlisted Marines to go to school fulltime while being paid normal pay and rats for food and housing. You need to talk to the training officer. I'll bet they will pay for the education costs and take you off extra duty rosters.
  2. You'll join enlisted so they won't just give you 2 years to go to school full time. You'll have to go to sea, if you're not a spu in prototype. You can apply to an officer program and then you'll go to school full time with the obligation to be an officer afterwards. Or you can stay enlisted and work on your degree online. In response to "Unless things have changed in recent years a nuke officer must have an pertinent Engineering Degree. Mathematics, while nice, would only get you to a instructor duty at Nuclear Power School." I would like to say that to become an officer, yes even nuke, you can have any degree. I had a division officer who had a degree in botany.
  3. no way will be able to attend college full time while on AD. ESPECIALLY as a Nuke. Navy duties will always take precedence. Nuke is a six year AD commitment. your best bet, if being an O is your ultimate goal is to apply to STA-21 once in. then your sole job in life is to get that 4 year degree( in three years) and they pay for it all. alternatively.. NROTC and apply for a commission directly.
  4. Full time college as a nuke would be impossible. After your schooling there are still qualifications for watchstations once you reach a sea command, plus mandatory submarine qualifications if you were to volunteer for submarines. Then there's operations and maintenance and continued training. Sometime in there you might want some free time to sleep and maybe actually have a life while you're young. Unless things have changed in recent years a nuke officer must have an pertinent Engineering Degree. Mathematics, while nice, would only get you to a instructor duty at Nuclear Power School. STA21 is an option to get a degree and become an officer after enlisting.
